Angolan Python Care

Enclosure

Angolan Pythons are a medium-sized, semi-arboreal species that benefit from secure enclosures with both floor space and climbing opportunities.

  • Minimum adult enclosure size: 4 ft L × 2 ft W × 2 ft H

  • Juveniles may begin in smaller enclosures and upgraded as they grow

  • Provide multiple snug hides on both the warm and cool sides

  • Include sturdy branches or low climbing structures

  • Enclosures must be escape-proof, as Angolan Pythons are strong and curious

Substrate

Angolan Pythons do best on substrates that provide moderate humidity retention while remaining clean and well-aerated.

Recommended substrate options:

  • Cypress mulch

  • Coconut husk (chips or fiber)

  • Reptile-safe soil blends

  • Aspen (acceptable in well-humidified enclosures)

Temperature

Angolan Pythons thrive at slightly cooler temperatures than many other python species and do best with stable gradients rather than intense basking.

  • Warm side ambient: 84–86°F (29–30°C)

  • Cool side temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)

  • Basking surface temperature: 88–90°F (31–32°C)

  • Nighttime drop: 72–76°F (22–24°C)

All heat sources should be controlled with thermostats. Radiant heat panels or ceramic heat emitters are preferred.

Humidity

Angolan Pythons require moderate humidity with access to higher humidity during shedding cycles.

  • Ideal humidity range: 55–70%

  • Increase humidity to 70–80% during shedding

  • Light misting or a humid hide may be used

  • Adequate ventilation is important to prevent stagnant air

Feeding

Angolan Pythons are steady feeders with moderate metabolisms.

  • Hatchlings: Appropriately sized mice every 5–7 days

  • Juveniles: Small to medium rats every 7–10 days

  • Adults: Medium rats every 10–14 days

Prey items should not exceed the widest part of the snake’s body. Frozen-thawed prey is recommended for safety and consistency.

Water

  • Provide a sturdy water bowl large enough for soaking

  • Fresh water should be available at all times

  • Change water at least twice weekly or immediately if contaminated

  • Occasional soaking is normal, especially before shedding
