Blood Python Care

Enclosure

Blood Pythons are a large, heavy-bodied terrestrial species that require secure enclosures with ample floor space and strong support.

  • Minimum adult enclosure size: 5 ft L × 2 ft W × 18–24 in H

  • Juveniles may start in smaller enclosures and be upgraded as they grow

  • Provide at least two snug hides (warm and cool side)

  • Enclosures must be well-secured, as Blood Pythons are powerful animals

  • Climbing structures are optional but low and sturdy if provided

Substrate

Blood Pythons benefit from substrates that retain humidity while remaining clean and stable under their heavy bodies.

Recommended substrate options:

  • Cypress mulch

  • Coconut husk (chips or fiber)

  • Reptile-safe soil blends

Temperature

Blood Pythons require consistent, moderate temperatures and do not tolerate excessive heat.

  • Warm side ambient: 86–88°F (30–31°C)

  • Cool side temperature: 78–82°F (25–28°C)

  • Basking surface temperature: 88–90°F (31–32°C)

  • Nighttime drop: 76–80°F (24–26°C)

All heat sources should be regulated with thermostats. Radiant heat panels or overhead heat sources are preferred. Avoid overheating, as Blood Pythons are particularly heat-sensitive.

Humidity

Blood Pythons thrive in moderate to high humidity environments, which support healthy sheds and respiratory health.

  • Ideal humidity range: 60–75%

  • Increase humidity to 75–85% during shed cycles

  • Provide a humid hide if needed

  • Ensure proper ventilation to prevent stagnant air

Feeding

Blood Pythons are strong feeders with slower metabolisms compared to other large pythons.

  • Hatchlings: Appropriately sized mice or rat pups every 7 days

  • Juveniles: Small to medium rats every 10–14 days

  • Adults: Medium to large rats every 14–21 days

Prey should not exceed the widest part of the snake’s body. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, which is a common issue in Blood Pythons. Frozen-thawed prey is strongly recommended.

Water

  • Provide a large, heavy water bowl capable of supporting soaking

  • Fresh water should be available at all times

  • Change water at least twice weekly or immediately if soiled

  • Regular soaking behavior is common, especially before shedding
