Macklots Python Care

Enclosure

Macklot’s Pythons (also known as Macklot’s Scrub Pythons) are an active, semi-arboreal species that benefit from both floor space and climbing opportunities.

  • Minimum adult enclosure size: 4 ft L × 2 ft W × 2 ft H

  • Juveniles can be started in smaller enclosures and upgraded as they grow

  • Provide sturdy branches, elevated hides, and secure climbing structures

  • A tight-fitting, escape-proof enclosure is essential

Substrate

Macklot’s Pythons do best on substrates that retain moderate humidity while remaining clean and well-ventilated. The substrate should support natural behaviors, allow for easy spot cleaning, and reduce the risk of respiratory or skin issues.

Recommended substrate options:

  • Cypress mulch

  • Coconut husk (chips or fiber)

Temperature

Macklot’s Pythons require a thermal gradient to properly regulate body temperature.

  • Basking area temperature: 90–92°F (32–33°C)

  • Warm side ambient: 84–88°F (29–31°C)

  • Cool side temperature: 78–82°F (25–28°C)

  • Nighttime drop: 74–78°F (23–26°C)

Use thermostats on all heat sources. Radiant heat panels, ceramic heat emitters, or deep heat projectors are recommended over heat mats for adults.

Humidity

Macklot’s Pythons thrive in moderate humidity with access to slightly higher humidity during shed cycles.

  • Ideal humidity range: 50–70%

  • Increase humidity to 70–80% during shedding

  • Provide a humid hide or lightly mist the enclosure as needed

  • Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent stagnant, overly damp conditions

Feeding

Macklot’s Pythons are carnivorous and generally have strong feeding responses.

  • Hatchlings: Appropriately sized mice every 5–7 days

  • Juveniles: Small to medium rats every 7–10 days

  • Adults: Appropriately sized rats every 10–14 days

Prey items should be no larger than the widest part of the snake’s body. Frozen-thawed rodents are strongly recommended for safety and humane feeding.

Water

  • Provide a heavy, tip-resistant water bowl large enough for the snake to soak if desired

  • Fresh water should be available at all times

  • Change water at least twice weekly, or immediately if soiled

  • Occasional soaking is normal, especially prior to shedding
